A number of announcements recently about extra flights to Lanzarote, indicate a huge commitment on behalf of the airlines at a time when the air travel industry is under enormous pressure.  This is great news for everyone, and evidence that Lanzarote is now seen as a major holiday destination for the future, despite the 20% plus drop in passengers landing on the island so far in 2009.

From October there will be new flights to Lanzarote by Ryanair (from no fewer than 10 airports), Aer Lingus (from Gatwick), Thomson and First Choice (from Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster).

Robin Hood Flies to Lanzarote

Residents of South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire will be cheered by the news that Thomson and First Choice’s owner TUI are adding flights to Lanzarote, as well as Turkey and Tunisia, on their Doncaster airport flight rosters from May 2010.

This follows new investment in the Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster to create new customer service and check-in desks in the terminal building, plus a children's play area and themed boarding gates.
Neil Morris, Planning Director for TUI, said "This is one of the few airports where we are expanding our route network. The only other place is Edinburgh."
Doncaster airport already welcomes over 1 million passengers annually through its terminal and hopes to develop further services and continue to increase the range of destinations for passengers in the South Yorkshire and Sheffield City Region, over the coming months and years.

Robin Hood airport has only been open for commercial flights for four years, but already more than 40 destinations can be reached from Robin Hood Airport.

Aer Lingus from Gatwick

Aer Lingus announced on 11th June that it is introducing 6 new routes to its schedules later this year, including London Gatwick to Lanzarote from late October.

The news follows the opening of the airline's first base outside Ireland at Gatwick.  Other new routes include Tenerife, Warsaw, Bucharest, Eindhoven and Vilnius in Lithuania.

Ryanair Flights to Lanzarote

On 29th July, Ryanair announced no fewer than 15 new flights to Lanzarote.  Starting in October 2009, the flights will go from Luton, Stansted, Bristol, Birmingham, Bournemouth, East Midlands, Glasgow, Liverpool, Dublin and Shannon. Further flights are planned to Gran Canaria and Tenerife, making 39 new flights in all.

According to Ryanair's Michael Cawley:

"Ryanair’s 39 new routes at Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife will deliver 2million passengers and sustain at least 2,000 jobs at these three Canary Island airports.
