The big Christmas event in Lanzarote, apart from Christmas Day of
course, is the Day of the Kings, also known as the Three Kings, which
is held on Epiphany, or 12th night, or 6th January. This day of course
commemorates the 3 Kings reaching Bethlehem to deliver presents to the
baby Jesus. This has led to a tradition in Spain where children
believe the 3 Kings to be the bearer of gifts. This is continued
today, via processions in Arrecife and towns and villages across
Lanzarote, where the modern day 'kings' dispense sweets to the
children, who (believe it or not) also have to wait until this day to
get their Christmas presents.
It is a spectacular event, and one not
to be missed if you are in Lanzarote at this time.
