Barely a year after establishing its new Gatwick hub, Aer Lingus has withdrawn flights to Lanzarote from Gatwick, along with a number of other European routes. The number of aircraft operating from Gatwick will also be reduced from 5 to 3, according to a Press Release from the company issued today.

According to the company, the changes  "reflect weak consumer demand and continuing challenges in the UK operating environment, which have impacted aviation sector performance generally".

The news will not be welcomed by travellers to Lanzarote from Gatwick, as it will reduce competition and capacity from the airport, which in turn is likely to push up average prices.
