Lanzarote: A Great Choice for Villa Holidays

CT200.jpg

Villa holidays have always been popular in Lanzarote, but over a 10 year period between the mid-1990s and the mid-Noughties, many more villas were built, most of them to a luxury standard with their own private pools.  This has made Lanzarote an incredibly popular all year holiday destination for families, who can often find it cheaper to rent a luxury family villa than to pay out for hotels and large restaurant bills.

In 2011, this has meant a huge increase in visitor numbers to Lanzarote: in the first 6 months of the year, they were up 20% according to AENA who compile statistics on visitors to various parts of Spain, the Canary islands and the Balearic islands. Many Lanzarote villa agencies have been claiming full occupancy levels since early July through to mid September, and that has not always been the case in recent years.

But where should you look in Lanzarote for a good luxury holiday villa?  There is certainly plenty of choice.  The largest growth in recent years has come in Playa Blanca in the south of the island, which you can get to in about 30 minutes from Arrecife airport.  There is plenty here for families - great beaches, a superb choice of restaurants, scenic walks, and fantastic views. There is also a beautiful new marina, called Marina Rubicon which features some lovely quayside cafes and restaurants, as well as designer shops.  You can chill out with a sundowner at the Cafe del Mar, or strut your stuff in the bowling alley.

Puerto del Carmen is also very popular for holiday villas, and has been since the 1970s - it is the longest established resort on Lanzarote.  Areas like Los Mojones, Los Pocillos and the Old Town never seem to lose their popularity, and many families have been coming to the same villas here for years. These days, it is probably regarded as a resort in its own right, but actually quite close to Puerto del Carmen is the new area of Puerto Calero.  This was built around a marina in the 1990s and is the closest that Lanzarote has to a rich people's playground.  There are some truly magnificent boats moored here that owners use to cruise the Canaries and the northern coast of Africa.  It's alright for some!

Puerto Calero has some very luxurious and large villas, as well as one of the most popular hotels in the Canaries. the Iberostar, Puerto Calero.  Also at Puerto Calero, there are some great restaurants and fine dining, and some sumptuous designer shops.  There is even a Whale and Dolphin Museum, which is very popular with children.

There are many reasons for choosing one of the many Lanzarote villas that are available for holiday rental.  Our villa rental section can help you choose well, by encouraging you to filter by area first of all, and then allowing you to browse through a short list of suitable villas.  Enjoy your holiday!
