Lanzarote Car Hire: 10 Things to Know

Hiring a car in Lanzarote is the best way to see the island at its best.  Follow our top tips below, and you won't go far wrong.

  1. You need to take your UK driving license with you.  If you have the ID card style license, make sure you take the paper document AS WELL.
  2. Don’t get fooled by low price rentals eg. under 70 euros for a week.  There may be clauses that require you to buy extras like a full tank of petrol on returning the car – usually at inflated prices.
  3. The more reputable firms like Autos Pluscar or Cabrera Medina will give you an all-in price that includes hire, comprehensive insurance, and even extras like child car seats.  Make sure you ask about these when you enquire.
  4. Many of the firms advertising car hire in Lanzarote via websites that you will find in Google are really just promoting wholesale car hire services.  Generally the prices are much higher than you will pay going via a local firm.
  5. The same is often true of car hire services advertised on airline websites: you will almost always pay more than going direct to a local Lanzarote car hire firm.
  6. We select from the best of the local firms on quality and price.  Currently this is Autos Pluscar – check out their current offers for cheap car hire in Lanzarote.
  7. Booking Lanzarote car hire is very straightforward. If you choose not to hire a car from Arrecife airport when you arrive, there are dozens of retail shops for the major firms in all the main resorts. Prices are often a bit cheaper from the resorts than from the airport, but you also need to factor in the cost of taxis or transfers from airport to resort and back again.
  8. Not all cars are air conditioned, so again check the details carefully when you reserve.  Even in the winter months in Lanzarote, you may regret not having aircon!
  9. Two special forms of car hire in Lanzarote that you may want to consider: 4 wheel drive cars, to enable you to go ‘off road’. Some of the smaller roads on the island are quite bumpy. Or try the full alfresco experience – open topped cars are very popular and plentiful in Lanzarote.
  10. Finally remember to drive on the right, and give way to the left on roundabouts!
