Puerto Calero

Puerto Calero is situated on the south east coast of Lanzarote, and in recent years has become a haven for well-heeled yachting enthusiasts, as well as those of us who just enjoy watching beautiful boats being manoeuvred in and out of the marina.  There are a number of high quality bars and restaurants looking out on to the marina, and all enjoy a sheltered and sunny position.

Construction of the marina itself was only started in the late 1980’s, along with the first luxury villas.  It actually opened in 1989 with 200 or so berths, but this was then doubled in the late 1990’s, and Puerto Calero can now house over 400 boats of up to 70 metres in length.  Because of its location around the coastline from, and north of, the Papagayo peninsular, the sea around Puerto Calero is often balmier and less choppy than the more exposed sea towards the southern tip of the island.

Earlier this year, the long-planned golf course also opened between Puerto Calero and Tias, although the club house is not due to open until 2009.
