Tias

Tias (which means “Aunts”) was named by Governor Alonso Fajardo in 1493 in honour of two of his aunts Doña Francisca and Doña Hernán.

However prior to 1730 to 1736 the town was not particularly large, it was only after the volcanic eruptions when people whose villages had been devastated moved to the area that it became an area of significance.

Tias is not often mentioned in tourist guides, even though it is the municipal capital of the first tourist resort in Lanzarote, Puerto Del Carmen. Much of the administrative work for the area is based in Tias at the ultra modern Ayuntiamento (Town Hall).

The Town itself is has grown almost three times in size in the last 40 years, once a small agricultural and administrative town, it is now a bustling cosmopolitan community. It has much to offer to both visitors and residents.

Tias has plenty of restaurants, bars, shops and places of interest. There is a growing number of quiet private villas for holiday rental in Tias, as well as for sale, and its is not unusual to see holiday makers enjoying Tias as a base from which to explore the island.

The town is a five minute car journey from Puerto Del Carmen and central to many areas. It now boasts a new medical centre, private hospital, and the new golf course.

The tapas bars and art gallery are favourites for many, and attract people from all over the island.
