: Lanzarote, Isle of volcanoes.

On this page you can read a short description of sights on Lanzarote.

Mirador del Rio is a vantage point designed by César Manrique with a beautiful view to the small islands La Graciosa, Montaña Clara and Alegranza. The unique construction (approx. 400m above the sea in the rocks of Famara) influed the producer of the movie Tim Taler to do the shooting there.
Opening hours: 10.00 - 17.00hrs

For the people living on the island, the Cuevas de los Verdes has been a place to escape and hide of the pirates - as well as Jameos del Agua.
Both caves belong to a 7k long system of tunnels which arised approx. 5000 years ago and which has its exit next to the sea. You can only visit the Cuevas de los Verdes by a guided tour in english and spanish.
Opening hours: 10.00 - 17.00hrs

Jameos del Agua was developped and has got a small, subterranean lake with small, white and blind crayfishes which normally can be find only in a depth of 1000m.
A restaurant, an unused pool, a lecture-hall and a museum invite you to stay a while.
Opening hours: 10.00 - 19.00hrs
On fridays and saturdays also: 19.00 - 03.00hrs

Teguise, the former capital of Lanzarote is not only nice to visit on sundays. On those days the quiet town changes to a big market, and the fields around Teguise are croweded with cars. You wont find the beauty of this town during the market.
If you would like to visit the Castillo Guanapay which was build to protect the habitants to the pirates, to visit the church or just to feel the special spirit of Teguise, you should come back during the week.
After the death of César Manrique, a well-known artist, architect and sculptor, his house has been opened to the puiblic.
The Fundacion César Manrique still tries to influence the happenings on the island in his spirit, unfortunately not always with success.
The house of the artist gives you an imagination of his kind of living and besides that, you can visit a collection of arts and pictures.
Opening hours: 10.00 - 18.00hrs
The Monumento del Campesino is a 15m high sculpture, made of water barrels of old ships. César Manrique put this contested monument in honour of the farmers.
In that place you can find a restaurant and a small museum. Sometimes this place is used for presentation of companies (example: the presentation of SLK of Mercedes-Benz).
Opening hours: 10.00 - 17.00hrs
Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, is a nice town to visit, not only for the cheaper prizes. The avenue next to the beach and the pedestrian zone invite you to a small stroll.
In the port of Arrecife is the Castillo de San Jose. On the first floor is an exhibition of arts and downstairs is a nice and good restaurant with a beautiful view to the port and the sea.
Opening hours of exhibition (for free): 11.00 - 21.00hrs
You should not miss to visit the Nationalparc of Timanfaya, the Fire Mountains! This unique landscape of volcanoes you will only see once in the world. The entrance includes a trip with the bus through this impressioning landscape, commented on in three languages. Visitours should bring a pullover or a jacket, the wind might be very cold.
Opening hours: 09.00 - 17.00hrs

El Golfo is a small fishing-village behind Timanfaya. The green lake is directly infront of a strange wall of rocks, next to the black beach of El Golfo. Because of the current it is dangerous to swim here.
On your way to El Golfo, between the salt-wors and the lagoon, there is Los Hervideros, a system of caves on the steep coast with impressioning water movements. For some people the most beautiful place of this area.
in the fishing-village El Golfo you can eat fresh fish while watching a wonderful sunset.

If you would like to stay a whole day at the beach and you have a car, you should go to the beaches of Papagayo.
There is only an off-road from Playa Blanca to those beaches and some rent-a-cars do not allow to drive there. Maybe it is a good idea to rent a small cross-coutry vehicle or to book a trip an a boat which is offered in Playa Blanca.
