Cueva de los Verdes

La Cueva de los Verdes is a truly incredible piece of natural architecture, formed by the eruption of the volcano Monte de la Corona some three thousand years ago. It is also one of the longest volcanic galleries in the world (6 km long).

It was the subject of a major project around 50 years ago that created a long pathway through the caves, and the installation of some quite inspired lighting that shows off the beautiful natural architecture quite brilliantly.

A lot further back (during the 17th century) the caves were used by locals to hide from Pirates and slave hunters.

When visiting the caves now, it is mandatory to go round as part of a guided tour, which generally depart at about 10-15 minute intervals.

Location: near the town of HarĂa, and on the Malpais de la Coruna. The Jameos del Aqua cave system is nearby and also worth a visit.
